Typing test

Type the text to measure your speed in words per minute and your accuracy. Nothing you type leaves your device.

What it measures

When a test ends, the result shows your net speed and these rows:

Row What it is
Accuracy Right keystrokes as a share of all keystrokes, rounded down to a whole percent
Gross speed Characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes, in words per minute (WPM)
Time How long the test ran
Characters typed The characters in your typed text when the test ended
Uncorrected errors Characters of your typed text that differ from the text
Keystrokes Every character you typed, including ones you deleted
Wrong keystrokes Keystrokes that didn’t match the text where they landed

How to use it

  1. Choose a test length: 30 s, 1 min, 2 min or 5 min. 1 min is the default, and the page remembers your choice on this device.
  2. Click or tap the text and start typing. The timer starts with your first key.
  3. Each character you type is marked right or wrong as you go; a wrong one is red and underlined. Backspace fixes a mistake. The cursor always stays at the end of what you’ve typed.
  4. Time left, Speed and Accuracy update above the text while you type. Speed shows from 1 second after your first key.
  5. When the test ends, your result takes the text’s place. Select Copy result to put it on your clipboard, or Start over for a new test.

Keys: Esc stops a running test without a result. Ctrl+Enter (⌘+Enter on a Mac) ends a test early and shows its result, and with a result shown it starts a new test. New text gives you a different text to type.

How it’s calculated

A word is 5 characters, spaces and punctuation included.

Both speeds are rounded to a whole number. Minutes are the test length, or the time from your first key to the end when a test ends early; an early end’s time is shown in seconds to a tenth of a second.

Where the texts come from

The texts were written for this site: more than 40 short passages in plain English, using letters, digits, spaces and common punctuation only. Each test joins several of them in a random order, enough text for 300 WPM over the whole test, so the text doesn’t run out before the time does.

Privacy

What you type stays on your device: the test runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere or saved. Of the test, the page remembers only your test length, in your browser’s storage. When the site shows ads, Google can use cookies for them: in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, Google asks for your consent first, and elsewhere Google’s own policies apply. The Privacy page explains how.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM worked out?

Every 5 characters you type count as one word, spaces and punctuation included. Your speed is those words divided by the minutes the test ran, so 300 characters in 1 minute is 60 WPM.

What is the difference between gross and net speed?

Gross speed counts the characters in your typed text when the test ends. Net speed takes off one word for each uncorrected error, a character that is still wrong when the test ends, and never goes below 0. 300 characters with 10 uncorrected errors in 1 minute is 60 WPM gross and 50 WPM net.

Do mistakes I corrected count against my accuracy?

Yes. Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were right when you typed them, rounded down to a whole percent. Backspace fixes a mistake in the text, so it isn't an uncorrected error, but the wrong keystroke still counts. 100% means you pressed no wrong key.

When does the timer start, and what ends a test?

The timer starts with your first key, not when the page opens. The test ends when the time runs out, when you've typed the whole text, or when you press Ctrl+Enter (⌘+Enter on a Mac). A result needs at least 1 second of typing. Press Esc to stop a test without a result.

Why can't I paste the text?

Pasting is off during the test, so the result measures your typing. Dropping text into the box is off too, and Enter, undo and redo add nothing.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap the text to open your keyboard. On-screen keyboards and keyboards that build characters from several keys both work. The box asks your keyboard to turn off autocorrect and automatic capitals; if it still replaces a word, that counts as deleting the old characters and typing the new ones.

Is what I type sent anywhere or saved?

No. The test runs in your browser, and what you type is never sent anywhere or saved. Of the test, the page remembers only the test length you chose, on this device.
