What it does

The word counter shows these counts for any text, and updates them as you type:

Row What it counts
Words Runs of letters or digits, in any language
Characters Every character you see, spaces and line breaks included
Characters without spaces The same, leaving out spaces, tabs and line breaks
Sentences Sentences that hold at least one word
Paragraphs Blocks of text separated by a blank line
Reading time Words divided by the reading speed
Speaking time Words divided by the speaking speed

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text into “Your text”, or select “Try a sample” to see how it works.
  2. Read the counts next to your text. They update as you type.
  3. To change the reading or speaking speed, open “More options” and enter a number of words per minute.
  4. Select Copy to put every count on your clipboard, one “Label: value” line each.

How the times are worked out

Reading time = words ÷ reading speed, and speaking time = words ÷ speaking speed, each rounded up to whole seconds. With the defaults, a 1,000-word essay takes 4 min 13 s to read and 6 min 40 s to say.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a word?

A run of letters or digits, as your browser's text rules split it. Contractions such as don't and numbers such as 3.14 are one word each, a hyphen splits a word in two, and emoji and punctuation are not words. Chinese and Japanese, written without spaces, are split into dictionary words.

How is the reading time worked out?

The word count is divided by the reading speed and rounded up to whole seconds. The default of 238 words per minute is an average for silent reading of English non-fiction; speaking time uses 150 words per minute. Change either speed under More options.

How are emoji and accented letters counted as characters?

Each character you see counts once. An emoji with a skin tone, a family emoji or a flag is one character, and so is a letter with an accent, whether the accent is stored with the letter or as a separate mark.

What is a paragraph?

A block of lines with a blank line before and after it. Lines with only spaces count as blank, and a single line break inside a block doesn't start a new paragraph.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Your text is counted on your device by your browser and is never sent to a server.
