The lorem ipsum generator makes placeholder text from the words of the classic lorem ipsum passage, to fill a page layout, a mockup or a test database before the real text exists:
Paragraphs: 1 to 50 paragraphs of 5 sentences each.
Sentences: 1 to 200 sentences in one block.
Words: exactly 1 to 1,000 words.
The page opens with three paragraphs on your first visit, then your last choices. Change an option and new text appears straight away. The line above the text shows how many words and characters it has.
How to use it
Choose Paragraphs, Sentences or Words.
Set How many.
Leave Start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” on to begin with the classic opening, or turn it off.
Select Copy all to copy the text, with a blank line between paragraphs.
Select Regenerate, or press Ctrl+Enter (⌘+Enter on a Mac), for new text with the same options.
The generator remembers your choices on this device, so they’re there the next time you open the page.
How it works
Every word comes from the 63 different words of the classic passage: lorem, ipsum, dolor, sit, amet, consectetur and so on, through laborum. Each sentence has 8 to 12 words, each length as likely as the others, and each word is picked at random from the 63, all equally likely. The first word gets a capital letter and the sentence ends with a full stop. A paragraph is 5 sentences. The random choices come from your browser’s cryptographic random number generator.
Good to know
How many runs from 1 to 50 paragraphs, 1 to 200 sentences or 1 to 1,000 words. If you switch to a unit with a smaller range, such as from 300 words to paragraphs, the field asks for a number in the new range.
The text only looks like Latin. It isn’t a translation of anything, and it has no meaning.
Words and characters are counted with the spaces in and the breaks between paragraphs left out.
The text is plain, with no HTML tags, so it pastes cleanly anywhere.
Search a page for “lorem” before you publish it, to catch placeholder text left behind.
Privacy
Everything is made in your browser, on your device. The text isn’t uploaded or stored. Only your choices for Generate, How many and Start with are kept, in this browser’s storage, so the page can show them again.
Frequently asked questions
What is lorem ipsum, and where does it come from?
Lorem ipsum is placeholder text: it fills a layout so you can judge fonts, spacing and length before the real words are written. It comes from a passage of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC, with words cut and changed, so it looks like Latin but doesn't mean anything. Even lorem is only part of a word: what's left of dolorem, pain.
What's the difference between paragraphs, sentences and words?
They're what How many counts. Paragraphs gives that many paragraphs of 5 sentences each, from 1 to 50. Sentences gives that many sentences in one block, from 1 to 200. Words gives exactly that many words, from 1 to 1,000. Sentences have 8 to 12 words; in Words, the last sentence takes whatever is left, so it can be shorter.
Why does the text start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”?
That's the start of the classic passage, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.”, which many people recognise as placeholder text at a glance. With Start with on, it's the first sentence and the rest is random. With Words below 8, you get its first words and a full stop, such as “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.” for 5, so the count stays exact. Turn Start with off for text that starts at random.
