How it’s worked out

International numbering reads the number in groups of three digits, each followed by its scale word: thousand, million, billion and trillion. Indian numbering reads the last three digits, then the thousands and lakhs in two digits each, then the crores. The formula shows the groups with your number:

1,234,567.89 = 1 million + 234 thousand + 567, point 8 9

In Indian numbering, the same number is 12 lakh + 34 thousand + 567. The words follow these rules:

Frequently asked questions

How are lakh and crore written?

Indian numbering groups the digits after the first thousand in twos: 1 lakh is 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand) and 1 crore is 1,00,00,000 (ten million). So 1,234,567 reads as twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven. Amounts above a crore count in crores, the crores themselves read again in lakh and thousand, with no arab or kharab.

How do I write an amount for a cheque?

Type the currency word, like dollars or rupees, and the fraction word, like cents or paise, under More options. The Cheque style row then reads, for example, One Thousand Two Hundred Dollars and Fifty Cents Only. With a blank fraction word, the cents show as a fraction: One Thousand Two Hundred Dollars and 50/100 Only.

How are decimals read?

Without a currency word, each decimal is read on its own after point, as typed: 3.80 is three point eight zero, up to 10 decimals. With a currency word, up to 2 decimals are hundredths, so 12.5 is twelve dollars and fifty cents. A zero fraction, like .00, is left out.

Why is there no “and” inside the number?

The words follow the plain form used on invoices and cheques: one hundred five, not one hundred and five. Hyphens join the tens and ones from 21 to 99, as in sixty-seven. The only “and” joins the amount to its fraction.
