What it does
The GST and VAT calculator adds tax to a price or takes it out of one:
- Add tax: from a price before tax, the price with tax and the tax, for example 1,180.00 and 180.00 for 1,000 at 18%.
- Remove tax: from a price with tax, the price before tax and the tax in it, for example 1,000.00 and 180.00 for 1,180 at 18%.
- GST in India: the tax split as CGST and SGST for a sale within a state, and as IGST for a sale between states.
The result updates as you type.
How to use it
- Pick Add tax for a price before tax, or Remove tax for a price that already includes it.
- Type the amount.
- Type the tax rate as a percentage.
- Select Copy result to put the figures on your clipboard.
The calculator remembers your choice and numbers on this device, so they’re there the next time you open the page.
How it’s calculated
With the amount A and the tax rate r in percent, Add tax works out:
Tax = A × r ÷ 100
For 1,000 at 18%, Tax = 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = 180.00, and the price with tax is 1,180.00. Remove tax works out the price before tax, and the tax is the rest:
Before tax = A × 100 ÷ (100 + r)
For 1,180 at 18%, Before tax = 1,180 × 100 ÷ (100 + 18) = 1,000.00, and the tax is 180.00.
The CGST and SGST rows follow Indian GST rules: CGST is half the tax, rounded half up to whole cents, and SGST is the rest, so the two add up to the tax. IGST is the whole tax. Each figure is worked out exactly and rounded half up to whole cents once, so taking the tax out of a price this calculator added it to gives back the amount you started with.
Good to know
- The amount can be from 0.01 to 1,000,000,000,000, and is rounded to whole cents.
- The tax rate can be from 0% to 100%, in steps of 0.01. At 0%, the tax is 0.00.
- One rate applies to the whole amount. A bill with items at different rates needs one sum per rate.
- No currency is assumed: the amounts are in whatever currency you type.
