Adds ' before values starting with = + - or @, so spreadsheets don't run them.

Helps Excel show accented letters when it opens the CSV.

What it does

Excel to CSV turns each sheet of an Excel workbook into a CSV file another program, a database or an import screen can read.

How to use it

  1. Drop your workbooks on the box, paste them, or select Choose files. Select “Try a sample” to see a two-sheet example.
  2. Check the options. Each file shows how many sheets and rows it gave, such as “2 sheets · 12 rows”.
  3. Select Download CSV for one file, or Download all to save every CSV in one ZIP file.
  4. Press Esc to stop a conversion that’s still working.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to a workbook with several sheets?

Each sheet with data becomes its own CSV file, named after the workbook and the sheet, such as `orders-Sales.csv`, and Download all saves them in one ZIP file. A workbook with one sheet of data gives `orders.csv`. Choose First sheet to convert only the first visible sheet that has data. Empty sheets, chart sheets and hidden sheets are skipped, and the line under the file says how many hidden sheets were left out.

Why do some values look different from Excel?

A CSV holds each value as it is stored, not as Excel formats it on screen. A cell showing 25% is stored as `0.25`, and £1,234.50 as `1234.5`. Numbers keep up to 15 significant digits, as Excel does, and TRUE and FALSE stay `TRUE` and `FALSE`. A cell with a formula gives its last calculated value, never the formula itself. Merged cells keep their value in the top-left cell only, which is where Excel stores it.

How are dates written?

A cell formatted as a date is written as `2026-01-31`, a date with a time as `2026-01-31 14:30:00`, and a time alone as `14:30:00`, rounded to the second. These forms read the same in every country and most programs import them. A number with an elapsed-time format, such as `[h]:mm`, stays a number.

Can it convert .xls files?

No. It reads the `.xlsx` and `.xlsm` workbooks Excel has saved by default since 2007. Open an older `.xls` file in Excel or another spreadsheet app and save it as an Excel Workbook (`.xlsx`) first. OpenDocument (`.ods`) and binary (`.xlsb`) workbooks are refused too, and so are workbooks protected with a password to open.

My CSV opens in Excel in one column or with odd letters. What can I do?

Where the comma is the decimal separator, as in Germany, France or Brazil, Excel expects semicolons between values, so choose Semicolon under Delimiter. If accented letters such as é show as two odd characters when Excel opens the CSV, turn on Add a UTF-8 BOM for Excel under More options: it tells Excel the file is UTF-8.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Your workbooks are converted by your browser, on your device, and your files aren’t uploaded. The CSV files are made on your device too, and they’re saved only when you select Download.
