What it does

The UTM link builder adds campaign parameters to a web address, so the visits the link brings show up together in your analytics. It sets up to six:

The page opens with an example link, built from https://example.com/spring-sale, newsletter, email and spring_sale. Type your own address and values and the link updates straight away.

How to use it

  1. Enter the page’s full address in Website URL, starting with https:// or http://.
  2. Fill in Campaign source, Campaign medium and Campaign name.
  3. Under More options, add a Campaign ID, term or content if you need them, and turn on Lowercase values to make every value lowercase.
  4. Select Copy link for the whole link, or Copy next to one parameter for its value alone.

How it works

Good to know

Privacy

Everything is made in your browser, on your device. The address and the values you type aren’t uploaded, stored or sent anywhere, and the builder never visits the address. Only Lowercase values is kept, in this browser’s storage, so the page can show it again.

Frequently asked questions

What do the UTM parameters mean?

They're labels in the link's query that analytics tools read to group the visits a link brings. utm_source names where the visit comes from, such as newsletter or google; utm_medium the kind of channel, such as email, cpc or social; utm_campaign the campaign, such as spring_sale. The optional ones: utm_id an ID for the campaign, utm_term a paid search keyword, and utm_content which link or ad it was, when one campaign has several.

Which fields are required?

The website address, Campaign source, Campaign medium and Campaign name. Leave one of them blank and the builder asks for it at its field. Campaign ID, term and content, under More options, are optional: a blank one is left out of the link.

Does capitalisation matter?

It can. Many analytics tools, Google Analytics among them, count values that differ only in case as different values, so Email and email show up apart. Turn on Lowercase values to make every value lowercase. It changes the values only: the address's path and query keep their case, and the domain is written in lowercase, as browsers do.

What happens to parameters already in the link?

They stay where they are, and the UTM parameters are added after them. A UTM parameter the builder sets replaces one already in the link, so the link never holds two values for it; one it doesn't set, such as utm_term with Campaign term blank, stays. A #fragment at the end stays at the end.

Is the link shortened or tracked?

No. The link goes straight to your page: there's no shortener, no redirect and no tracking added by this site. The builder doesn't open or check the address, and nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored.
