What it does

The time duration calculator finds how long it is from a start time to an end time, and shows:

The answer updates as soon as you change a time.

How to use it

  1. Enter the start time and the end time, in hours and minutes.
  2. To take off a break, open More options and enter it in minutes.
  3. Select Copy result to put the answer on your clipboard.

The break is kept on this device. The times aren’t: each visit starts at 9:00 in the morning and 5:30 in the afternoon.

How it’s calculated

Duration = End − Start − Break. The formula under the result writes times on a 24-hour clock, so 5:30 in the afternoon is 17:30, whichever way your browser shows the time fields. When the end time is earlier than the start time, it ends the next day, so 24 hours are added: Duration = End − Start + 24 h − Break.

For example, 17:30 − 09:00 − 0 min is 8 h 30 min, which is 510 min. Decimal hours are the minutes ÷ 60, rounded to two decimal places: 510 ÷ 60 = 8.50 h.

Everything is worked out in your browser, on your device. Nothing you type is uploaded. The times aren’t stored; only the break is kept, in this browser’s storage, so the page can show it again.

Frequently asked questions

What if the end time is past midnight?

An end time earlier than the start time is read as the next day, and 24 hours are added. So 10 in the evening to 6:15 in the morning (22:00 to 06:15 in the formula) is 8 h 15 min, and the result shows Ends the next day: Yes. Two equal times give 0, not 24 hours.

What are decimal hours?

The same duration written as hours with a decimal part, such as 8.50 h for 8 h 30 min, which is handy for timesheets and pay. They’re rounded to two decimal places, so 20 min is 0.33 h and 10 min is 0.17 h.

How does the break work?

Open More options and enter a break in whole minutes. It’s taken off the time between the start and the end, so 9:00 in the morning to 5:30 in the afternoon (09:00 to 17:30 in the formula) with a 30 min break is 8 h 00 min. A break as long as the time between them, or longer, is marked at Break.

Does it count daylight saving changes?

No. The times are clock times, so a night when the clocks change counts the same as any other. On those nights the real time can be an hour more or less.
