What it does
The binary translator shows the bytes your text is stored as, written in binary, or reads binary back as text:
- Text to binary writes each character as UTF-8 bytes, and each byte as 8 digits of 0 and 1, so
Ais01000001. - Binary to text reads groups of 0s and 1s back as bytes and the bytes as UTF-8 text.
How to use it
- Choose Text to binary or Binary to text, then type or paste into “Your text”. Select “Try a sample” to see an example.
- The result appears next to your text and updates as you type.
- Select Swap to move the result into “Your text” and switch the mode, for example to check that your binary reads back as your text.
- Select Copy to put the result on your clipboard.
Options
- Space between bytes puts a space between each group of 8 digits. It only changes Text to binary; reading binary works with or without spaces.
- The tool remembers the mode and the option you chose on this device.
Good to know
- When reading binary, spaces, tabs and line breaks separate groups. A group of 1 to 8 digits is one byte (
1000001is read as01000001), and a group of 16, 24 or more digits is split into bytes of 8. - If the binary holds a character other than 0 and 1, or a group of 9 or more digits that doesn’t split into bytes, the tool shows its line and column.
- Bytes that don’t form UTF-8 text, such as part of an image or a character cut short, are reported instead of being shown as garbled characters.
Limits
Your text can be up to 100,000 characters long.
Privacy
Your text is processed on your device: the translating runs in your browser, and nothing you type or paste is uploaded. Only your choices for the mode and Space between bytes are kept in your browser for next time.
